Entering Swim Meets
Swimmers will receive information about forthcoming meets by email, from their coaches
and the club notice board (if you are new to the Club
or have changed your email address please send an email to
pfeeneyrbasc@aol.com
to keep our details up to date). Swimmers and their parents
should discuss with their coach the suitability of the meet and the
appropriate selection of events to enter. The Club maintains a record of
swimmers times based on personal bests (PB's) from previous swim meets (Hy-tek
Sports Software for Swimming), or for new
swimmers from Club Time Trials. Deadlines for submitting
entries by this Club to the Club organising the meet is normally at least one
month before the weekend the meet takes place. Please check your emails
and the the notice board
regularly! Entry fees are also payable see

Time Trials
The club organizes time trials usually twice a year for each squad at
one of the regular training sessions. The swimmers are not racing
against each other but against the clock. The times recorded are used to
determine the progress of swimmers and whether they have attained a
sufficient level to enable them to enter external competitions.
Time trials are also a great opportunity for parents to get involved in
timekeeping.

Mini-league
The Clyde Coast Mini-League is a team competition for younger swimmers 8, 9, 10 and 11
years and is a fun low key introduction to competitive swimming.
Swimmers can compete in 25m, 50m, 100m and relay events for club points
in three Galas held in March and April. The top 6 Clubs from the West
District then go through to a final held in June.

Graded Meets
The next stage in competition after Club Championships and Mini-league
is usually Graded Meets. These meets are seeded with an entry time given
for each event that swimmers with a time faster than the entry time
cannot enter. This is to encourage younger competitors and swimmers of
modest ability to compete at external Meets and to achieve their
personal best
times (PB's). Medals are normally awarded for 1 - 2 - 3 and pendants for
4 - 5 - 6. Swimmers that swim 'Too Fast' receive a 'speeding ticket' ,
as the main aim is for children to achieve a PB a 'speeding ticket' is
considered a great result.

Open Meets
Open meets are run by larger swimming clubs or groups of clubs and cover
a full range of age groups and events and normally take place over the
course of a weekend. Open meets give more advanced swimmers valuable experience of
competition and provide a benchmark to measure their performance and
progress against other competitors in the same age group. They are also
important to obtain qualifying times for West District Championships and
Scottish Nationals.

in the full range of distances and competitive strokes from 50m sprints to 1500m distance as well
as team relays. Consideration times are required for entry to

SASA:
The Scottish Amateur Swimming Association - the governing body of
swimming in Scotland (England - ASA, Wales - WASA).
Short Course:

length. True short course is usually in 25m or 25yd pools e.g. Renfrew
Baths.
Long Course:
A swimming competition, which takes place in pools of 50m e.g.Tollcross
and East Kilbride.
Qualifying Times:
Some competitions have a qualifying time set by the organisers. This
applies at National level and West District level as well as many Open
Club Meets. Competitors must achieve the qualifying time at a recognised
competition before entering the particular event.
Open Meets:
These are competitions run by clubs, which are open to entry by any club
or swimmer affiliated to SASA.
Graded Meets:
These competitions are organised to provide competition appropriate to

Split Times:
A lap time that coaches often record for teaching the concept of pacing.
For instance, split times may be taken at 25m, 50m and 75m during a 100m
race. Splits are also recorded during relay events - this is the
separate time for each individual who swims as part of the relay team.
PB:
Personal Best. Each swimmer will have a best time for each event. The
times will differ between short and long course swimming. Short course
times will normally be faster because of the advantage gained from extra
turns.

at a meet. The referee makes the final decisions and sees to the
efficient running of the meet.
Starter:
The SASA official who is responsible for starting each race - usually

time for each swimmer.
Note : Workshops

official at any of these levels.
Electronic Timing:
This will be used at most major meets and galas and will take
precedence over manual timing.

Nutrition
What you eat before and on the day of competition can significantly
affect your performance on the day. Make sure you have a good breakfast
at least two hours before the morning warm-up such as a large bowl of
cereal, fruit juice, toasted bread / rolls, boiled eggs, NOT rolls and
sausage, burgers or fizzy drinks - You will not be popular if you throw
up poolside after a race!.
When the meet is over both a morning and afternoon session please bring a
packed lunch that should include filled rolls / sandwiches, diluting juice,
bananas and light fruits, cereal bars or plain biscuits. It is a good
idea to start nibbling after your last morning session in readiness for the
start of afternoon warm-ups.
Make sure you bring plenty of water or still juice to drink or some change
for the vending machines.
For more information please go to the BBC Sports Academy web site and
